Watch Your Back

http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSTRE50Q5IA20090127?feedType=RSS&feedName=healthNews&sp=true

I've gone to great lengths to avoid high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) since my RSD diagnosis, but this is a great article for anyone who happens to ingest the junk every once and a while. Mercury in HFCS? Yup, and guess what ladies... it's in your cosmetics, too. I switched to all natural products long ago, thank goodness, but imagine soaking your skin, your largest organ, with mercury laden products. Sick... I remember as a child in school being told that if a mercury thermometer broke, to stand back and tell an adult. So, why is it allowed to be in our food and beauty items? Good question...

I couldn't agree with you more about switching your cosmetics to natural products....so glad someone cared to make them!!

And you are right, your skin is your largest organ. Most people don't even look at it that way, they really don't even think about absorption!!
I try to educate people about the skin, and how it absorbs by asking things like:
Why do you think the nicotine patches work? Why do you think the birth control patches work? Why do you think the pain patches work? Because it gets 'absorbed' through your skin quicker than it would if you were to take a pill!! You can almost see the light bulbs going on after that. =)

Thank you for posting this, hopefully it will help switch on a lot more light bulbs!!=)

Or our teeth? Funny, when leftover 'silver' fillings material is done with, dentists must dispose of it as a HAZARD. Somehow, magically, when it passes our gums, they keep reassuring us it is PERFECTLY SAFE.

In Canada, where I live, I recall seeing something in a magazine where Health Canada (our regulatory body, probably like the FDA in the US) was reviewing the mercury-containing fillings debate. The article said that there were 14 dentists and other scientists making up the panel, I believe; nearly half of them quit becuase they stated that it was clear that the panel was 'stacked' with 'pro' mercury-containing fillings and therefor the review was biased from the start.

Dentists, including my own excellent one, don't believe there is a concern about the fillings and they prefer them because they last much longer than the 'composite' type.

Happily, I've stayed with my awesome dentist because she is respectful of my views after stating her reasoning; I wonder about other things...

Like, when my son was 6, he was found to have cavities between his molars, due to flossing difficulties (tight teeth and not wanting to!). They wanted to use general anesthetic as he was quite frightened. I found out literally as they were doing them that the pedodontist (child dentist specialist) would ONLY use 'silver' fillings and the didn't leave me any room to choose nor argue - he was already sedated, basically!

Had I the information I have now, I'd have carried my son out of there anyway!

Quite 'coincidentally' he began to have behavioural problems in school and an increase to what people tend to label as hyperactivity. He also developed food sensitivities/possible allergies and became quite chemically sensitive.

Mere coincidence? Well, I honestly do not think so.

Luckily for my son he didn't have those teeth for long (so why would they care what kind of fillings they used?!) but the other health and behavioural things were more long-lasting.

I spent years and probably thousands of dollars finding things to help my son (all as a single, working - mostly - mom) because this is my child, of course!

Can you imagine the struggle when, one day I had run out of fruit to include in his lunch, so stopped by his school to drop some off... and found his class returning from getting their rewards for their running program (so many laps around the schoolyard for fitness education!).

Their reward? Solid, one pound chocolate Easter bunnies!

Aaah, I rant and ramble, but imagine! These horrid processed things, perfumes which contain as many or more toxins than cigarette smoke, air and fabric 'fresheners' which contain known CARCINOGENS (yep, cancer-causing agents!) - I wonder that all of us won't develop cancer, MS and other deadly illnesses while we wonder about finding a cure!

GOOD FOR YOU for educating yourself! You're not only helping yourself, but you're educating others and helping our planet!

PS Only a little more rant; promise! :)

My son is a healther, happier teen (though he has his moments) and is VERY aware of the 'evils' of hidden chemicals everywhere. I'm sad he has to be so vigilant and runs into things like gym class changeroom body deodorant sprays, which make him angry, itchy-eyed, tired and so on... and he is learning to advocate for his safety.

Think of all the other people who innocently walk through a perfume department of a store or, where I realised what was happening to my son: the supermarket laundry aisle! He went from happy and well-behaved to having a full on temper-tantrum/meltdown in under 5 minutes! I realised then and there it was the SCENTS! It was enough to make me nauseous and headachey; for him, much more severe...

Eeek, that is scary! So many toxins found in food these days, let alone thinking about make-up!! Not that I wear much make-up or often, but I will be double checking the labels now...My friend runs an online store for all organic beauty products, www.pukkaskincare.com , I am slowly getting addicted to her stock, it's articles like this that just reinforce with me that when it comes to beauty products and food, it's definitely worth the extra cost of organic...not too mention it tastes better!
Hope you are having a lovely Monday :D

Hmm...maybe I'll have to check out my make-up. And I eat like crap, but now that I know there's mercury in it, I'm going to feel bad about it.
